The ultra-luxury car has come of age. The rich and the image conscious happily shell out a million or more for a beauty they can call their own.  In fact, the rarer and the more expensive the car, the faster it is sold. Although, there are too many winners in the segment “Top 10 most expensive cars,” a few stand out.

The brand new Agera R is the most powerful Koenigsegg ever produced and was a star at the Geneva Motor Show held last month, in March 2011. The display model at Geneva has been called a cross between the car driven by James Bond in the Swiss Alps and Speed Racer’s car.

The V8 engine, capable of running on bio-fuel, is a very special customer car.  It comes with a special roof section featuring a ski-box. This can be swapped with conventional roof when not required.  The is one of the most expensive cars with a unique feature – it comes with winter tyres.

Koenigsegg was the first to manufacture sports cars using green technology.  The most surprising aspect of this car is that it is a flex fuel car, and able to run on multiple fuels. It is also possible to run it on normal petrol, but then the power goes down by about 100 hp.  A dynamic rear wing on this car helps with wind resistance.

Pagani Huayra: $1.4 million

  • Top Speed: 230 mph
  • H/P: 700
  • Acceleration: 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds

After five years in the making and eight scale models later, the Hyper car is finally ready.  Huayra has been the subject of a lot of controversy over its nose that looks like the world’s biggest catfish. Well, this one is certainly the fastest catfish and a land bounded rocket ship, with its high speeds.

The seven-speed gear shift paddles alone with all other primary functions are found directly on the steering wheel. The driver never needs to take his hands off the steering.  A high-definition touch screen provides all the infotainment; including audio functions, secondary vehicle functions, Bluetooth phone as well as satellite navigation.

This is an ultra luxury convertible with an open top that can be fully opened at the rear, allowing passengers to enjoy the blue sky; while the chauffeur’s compartment remains closed completely.  When the passengers desire, the chauffeur can operate a switch and the roof opens electro-hydraulically and rests on a shelf in the rear.  The 2011 Landaulet also comes with an optional 19” cinema screen mounted to the partition.

This is a very elegant car built in accordance with the needs of individual customers and makes one feel like royalty.

Hennessey Venom GT – $1 million

  • Top Speed: 267 mph
  • H/P: 1200
  • Acceleration: 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds

With only 10 units of the Venom GT produced, in different price ranges, this exclusive car from Hennessey is rarer and more outrageous than the Bugatti Veyron, but it is a lot cheaper.  With the nose of a Lotus Elise, this is perhaps the world’s greatest hybrid.

This car with an adjustable rear wing also has an adjustable suspension system, which allows people to adjust the ride height depending on the speed and driving conditions.  The twin Garrett turbos help the Venom GT achieve insane HP of 1,200.  The top speed may be less by an extremely small margin, but this Veyron breaker only records 15.9 seconds for 0 to 200 mph, whereas the Veyron takes 24.2 seconds.

Although, Venom GT is one of the 10 most expensive cars in the world and costs a million dollars, this is an easy-maintenance car.  You may have to sell stocks to get a Bugatti repaired, but this car uses mostly Lotus parts that can be ordered directly from the dealer.

These were created to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Pininfarina, a designer of sports cars.

Powered by a V12 under its bonnet, this is a true roadster that offers a most pleasurable ride in an open-top setting. In fact, the soft top that comes with the car is not meant for regular use.  It has been designed only as an option for when the weather gets bad. The car is extremely sleek looking when compared to the other models, as it crouches lower to the ground.  It goes without saying that the interior design of this car is highly sophisticated.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce: $455,000

  • Top Speed:  212 mph
  • H/P: 670
  • Acceleration: 0-100 in 3.4 seconds

This is a powerful Lamborghini and not an idle boast. One of the most exceptional super sport cars of all time, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce is much more powerful, faster and lighter than its predecessor.  It wasn’t long ago that Lamborghini car were the fastest beasts money could buy. Of course that changed over the last few years, with the rise of the boutique supercar.

The SuperVeloce is considered to be the answer from Lamborghini, to all those super cars.  It is not just one of the most expensive cars; it is also the purest sports car that has ever come out of an Italian car factory.

For those who wish to make this Rolls-Royce literally their “own,” the Bespoke service can be used. Get your initials or an emblem or a family crest embroidered to add a high level of personal touch.

These are just some of the most expensive cars and there are many more that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.  These cars use light weight materials, and a heavy inclusion of race-inspired technology is clearly visible in most of them. Owning one of these devils is certainly the privilege of the rich and famous. But who’s stopping us from admiring them?
