What is the Most/Least Energy Efficient Industry?

Electricity is the main driving force behind all thriving industries in the world. Whether it is the healthcare sector, the entertainment industry, or the manufacturing industry; increased electricity consumption is becoming a worry. Companies and industries struggle to stay ahead in the race for being energy efficient; not only does it label the industry as ‘environment friendly’, but it also improves the industrial processes, lowers cost, and positively impacts its reputation. Despite being the major contributors to economic growth, these industries have a major part in the escalating pollution levels and eventually, giving rise to the greenhouse effect.

Because of the differing nature of work, every industry has its own specific measures to become efficient in the consumption of electricity. Moreover, the difference in geographic locations also matter; for example, residents of Texas can visit http://www.shopelectricityratestexas.com/electricity-companies-in-texas/ to see the rates at which industries in Texas abide by. Similarly, all states have different electricity rates, and these rates also determine the need for a more electrically efficient industrial set up.

The Healthcare Sector

The healthcare sector has recently vowed to ‘go green’ and save as much energy that is possible without compromising on the healthcare facilities. The main motivating factor behind the healthcare sector’s decision to go efficient is the saving on energy cost, along with getting government incentives and improving public image. Most industries in the healthcare sector are practising energy consumption tracking (mostly on a monthly basis), educating staff members about energy saving, upgrading/installing equipment to save more, and negotiating energy contracts. Moreover, many organizations have installed energy efficient lighting systems like occupancy sensors and daylight sensors  to avoid any wastage.

Manufacturing Industries

Great amount of energy is utilized in both the resource extraction and manufacturing processes in the manufacturing industries. With unimaginable electric consumption taking place for running machinery like steam systems and electric motors, the manufacturing sector has recently attempted to optimize these machines to consume the least energy. The machinery is optimized in a way that it also requires least maintenance along with electric power.

Industries also practice conventional electricity generation, which is approximated to be 30 per cent more efficient. Variable speed drives are installed in electric motors so they do not have to operate on a constant speed all the time; this way the motor will run according to the load requirement and will not consume a constant amount of energy at all times. Superconducting materials are used in motor coils to eliminate energy loss, whereas voltage optimization is also a helpful measure to lower electrical consumption.

Entertainment Industry

This is an under the radar industry when it comes to energy consumption and efficiency. However, recently some energy efficient equipment is being introduced in the entertainment industry that targets lower electrical consumption. For example, movie sets are becoming electrically efficient due to light equipment like hive lighting, which claims to reduce energy consumption by around 50 to 90 per cent.

In addition, entertainment facilities like amusement parks, stadiums, theatres, museums, and other miscellaneous entertainment venues are finding ways to reduce electrical consumption. Some measures include altering timings to close down early and using efficient lightning.

At present, most industries are making an effort to go green and reduce electric consumption. However, there are still some loopholes in each industry’s system, which is either due to understandable constraints or lack of effort. Industries that optimize their systems and utilize renewable energy systems tend to flourish more, and will benefit even more in the coming years.

These industries need to take a look at the advantages of adopting renewable energy; if they do so, it will be a major motivating factor for them to turn energy-friendly.
