<p>In such a critical situation, the possibility to stop the <a title="Cancer" href="http://topics.dirwell.com/health/tag/cancer" target="_blank"><strong>cancer</strong></a> from growing seems like a miracle in itself.  Scientists published a new discovery in a medical journal called FASEB, which explains how red wine and green tea can hinder prostate cancer growth significantly.</p>
<p>This finding is considered very important as the knowledge that the compounds in these drinks can actually stop prostate cancer growth may lead to the development of drugs that could slow cancer progression.</p>
<p>When mice were treated with green tea and wine polyphenols, they showed a dramatically reduced tumor growth.</p>
<p>According to Gerald Weissmann, MD and editor-in-chief of the FASEB Journal, “ The profound impact that the antioxidants in red wine and green tea have on our bodies is more than anyone would have dreamt just 25 years ago. As long as they are taken in moderation, all signs show that red wine and green tea may be ranked among the most potent ‘health foods’ we know.”</p>

<p>In recent years, green tea and red wine have been hailed as great health foods and the benefits of consuming them are found to be many.  Scientists found that they have the capacity to reduce human cancer incidence and mortality, due to the presence of a broad range of compounds called polyphenols.  A recent study also reiterated the fact that red wine possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties and also works as a medicine to prevent heart disease.</p>

<p>Do you think you will have cancer after four or five years? A question that could have drawn a blank just a few days earlier can be answered in the positive today.</p>
<p>All thanks to a ground-breaking blood test that is expected to help with cancer detection as early as five years before the disease surfaces, which is a feat not accomplished through either CT scans or <a title="Mammography" rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammography" target="_blank"><strong>mammograms</strong></a>.</p>
<p>This new technique, which can pick up early warnings of many types of cancers from the immune system, before they even begin, has been developed by Oncimmune Ltd, a diagnostic company affiliated to the University of Nottingham.</p>
<p>For millions of people around the globe, this remarkable technology could mean a difference between life and death; a difference between living healthy and suffering. This could change the whole diagnosis and treatment process for all types of solid cancers such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer.</p>

<p>The name of this test is “EarlyCDT-Lung” and it will be launched in the USA this month, with a launch expected in the UK early next year.</p>
<p>As part of the research, the results were obtained from blood samples of high-risk patients with breast cancer, who had given blood samples for many years during their annual checkup, before they were finally diagnosed with cancer.  These blood samples showed that more than half of these cancers could have been detected up to four years before they were actually diagnosed.</p>
<p>Another study conducted at the Mayo Clinic in the United States arrived at similar results for lung cancer, where they could detect lung cancers as early as five years prior to when they were actually diagnosed.</p>
<p>EarlyCDT Lung on its launch, will be used for diagnosing lung cancer for up to five years before a tumor appears.  Everyone who has ever smoked or are currently smoking and are aged between the ages of 40 and 70 are expected to be the target population for this test. Even others who have ever been exposed to asbestos or even had secondary smoke exposure for long periods of time are also considered appropriate.</p>
<p>Experts in the medical field are of the opinion that this is nothing short of a miracle that has the potential to save the lives of millions world-wide.</p>

<p><a title="Food and Drug Administration" rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_and_Drug_Administration" target="_blank"><strong>FDA</strong></a> officials confirmed significant violations in manufacturing regulations by drug maker McNeil, a division of Johnson &amp; Johnson.  The severity of this issue can be understood by the fact that the case has been referred to FDA crime branch.</p>
<p>In January, McNeil recalled several containers of children’s drugs, including over-the-counter drugs after they received complaints of an “unusual” smell that made them feel sick.</p>
<p><strong>The category of recalled drugs include:</strong></p>

<li><strong>Children’s Tylenol Suspensions</strong></li>

<p>Production has been suspended at the plant where these recalled drugs are manufactured.  The drugs are made in the United States for distribution in the United States and other countries, such as Canada, Dubai, Kuwait, Fiji, Jamaica, Panama, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago.</p>

<p>In spite of the “voluntary” recall, FDA blames Johnson &amp; Johnson for the delay in fixing the problem.  Issues with the drugs were reported as far back as 2008. According to FDA, some of the products contained too much of the active ingredient, some had a deficiency of inactive ingredients and others contained “tiny particles,” which may be tiny metal parts.</p>
<p>Just when the rumbling is subsiding on whether children’s medication is safe or not, another recall screams at us. FDA advices to stop administering these products with immediate effect, and suggests switching to the generic formula, which is not affected by the recall.</p>

It’s come to light that vitamin D affects the overall functioning of various systems in the body. New research from a study conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge and the University of Michigan links low levels of vitamin D to cognitive impairment in older adults.</p>
<h3>Impact of Vitamin D</h3>
<p>Let’s take a look at what good levels of vitamin D can contribute in terms of health versus what can be affected when levels are low. Research has shown that vitamin D can reduce the risk of <strong><a title="Type 1 Diabetes" href="http://topics.dirwell.com/health/tag/type-1-diabetes" target="_blank">type 1 diabetes</a></strong> and certain forms of cancer. We also know that deficiencies in vitamin D have been attributed to muscle weakness, bone problems like <strong><a title="Osteoporosis" rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteoporosis" target="_blank">osteoporosis</a></strong>, compromised immunity, as well as some cancers and <a title="Cardiovascular Disease" rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiovascular_disease" target="_blank"><strong>cardiovascular diseases</strong></a>.</p>

<p>As our bodies get older, our skin’s ability to absorb vitamin D from sunshine declines. It makes sense that as we age, we should talk to our physician about adding a vitamin D supplement to our routine.</p>
<h3>Dementia Connection</h3>
<p>The recent study by Cambridge and Michigan researchers, published in the Journal of Geriatric Psychology and Neurology, looked at nearly 2000 adults over age 65. “The study found that as levels of vitamin D went down, levels of cognitive impairment went up.” High levels of cognitive impairment are known to lead to dementia. The subjects with the lowest levels of vitamin D were over two times as likely to be dealing with cognitive impairment.</p>
<p>This significant finding led the researchers to establish a significant relationship between levels of vitamin D and <a title="Brain" href="http://topics.dirwell.com/health/tag/brain" target="_blank"><strong>brain</strong></a> function, however, they do admit that more research needs to be done in this area in order to determine recommendations for the public.</p>
<h3>What It Means</h3>
<p>Despite the inconclusive results related to brain function, we do know that vitamin D is beneficial to many of the body’s systems and to the development of strong bones. So, in the meantime, it’s recommended that older adult take action to make sure they are getting sufficient amounts.</p>

Because it’s difficult to get the amount you need in these ways alone, it’s likely that you’ll also be advised to take a vitamin D supplement. Experts recommend adults take at least 1000 International Units (IU’s) of vitamin D each day to supplement their diets.</p>
