Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure. This is most popular and common ailment arising out of heart. Most of the human beings are affected by this condition.

Hypertension can be defined that the pressure or force exerted against the arterial walls while the heart pumps each time and the maximum pressure measured in this process is called systolic pressure and the minimum pressure in between the beats is called the diastolic pressure.

This condition is attained in every hypertensive person slowly and it reaches the maximum pressure. In the initial stage of this condition one does not show or feel any symptoms. They develop symptoms only in the later stages.

The common symptoms are giddiness in most of the cases, head aches of mild or severe form, nose bleeding in rare cases, dizzy spells. Somebody doesn’t develop symptoms even in the advanced stages and it is noticeable only during regular health checkups. The normal human blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg. When it is up to 140/90 it is called transitional. Up to 160/100 it can be called as essential hypertension and it is also comes under transitional. When it goes and settles beyond 160/100 mm Hg. It is typically called hypertension and it is a permanent condition.

Hypertension is caused in individuals due to various causes such as heredity, hormone changes linked with kidney activity, obesity, excess salt intake pattern, low potassium intake and alcohol intake.

There are two risk factors for high blood pressure. 1. Weight and 2. Salt. These 2 are the factors involved in forming and maintaining the high blood pressure. To control the blood pressure in the normal range, it is possible to select a food (“high blood pressure diet”) that will keep up the body weight in normal or will reduce if necessary and salt intake within the norms of about of 2400 mg per day. This will enable the body to maintain or reduce the high blood pressure and hence it is well known fact that food plays an important role in lowering the high blood pressure. Practicing the habit of taking certain foods regularly would certainly help in lowering the blood pressure but who have chronic affection of hypertension would not enjoy the full benefit of this.

Vitamin D and calcium is a known thing that fights against hypertension and taking skimmed milk will lower the blood pressure. The skimmed milk is having only low content of fat. Sun flower seeds, salmon, sardines, nuts, and dark colored green leaf vegetables are having high calcium. Beans, spinach, figs, grapes, whole grains, yellow corns, maize, apples and almonds are having much more magnesium salts which are also very useful in reducing blood pressure. The flavonoids found in chocolates are of great value in lowering the hypertension. High content of potassium such as in soybeans, bananas, oranges, spinach, watermelon, and white potatoes are good examples in lowering the blood pressure. High fiber content containing in oats, fruits, vegetables are also probably helps in reducing the high blood pressure. Omega – 3 present in oily fishes are main sources of food that lowers the blood pressure.

Salt contains in the food that we buy for cooking and the salt we add during cooking on the food. Generally the salt is having the property of retaining fluid in the body and high intake of salt in the food causes the body to have more fluid volume in the blood and thereby compels the heart to work harder with force in pumping the excess volume of blood. Hence, salt is to be avoided above the normal norms of intake.

Coffee is central nervous system stimulant. Coffee taken in excess is harmful to heart and it forces the heart to work faster and thereby it raises the arterial pressure gradually. Hence intake of coffee in large quantity has to be avoided. Like wise, nicotine in the smoking tobacco is also a stimulant that causes raise in blood pressure. Hence, it is to be avoided completely. Extra body weight and obesity causes the heart to work harder and it raises the arterial pressure. Hence, obesity and extra weight should not be allowed. Proper dieting and necessary exercise will help in reducing the body weight.

Alcohol and certain drugs cause keeping the body with more fluid and it is well known factor that this excess accumulation of fluid is to be removed through blood by hearts increased rate and arterial pressure. Hence, these things have to be avoided positively.

Modern exercises and walking is the useful techniques that lower the high blood pressure. There are many scientifically proved home remedies that can be used to lower the high blood pressure.
