3D LCD TVs Without Glasses
According to the Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), televisions capable of displaying 3D images without requiring the viewers to wear glasses, could hit the market by 2015. 3D has become increasingly popular in movie theaters, with numerous blockbusters being custom-made to work with current 3D technology. There has been a push to get the technology on televisions, but these screens still require glasses.
The research group reportedly already has a 42-inch 3D TV that does not require glasses, and there are plans to create them as large as 65 inches. Right now they are working with still images, showing slideshow pictures converted into 3D, and the images at this point are still blurry and in need of improvement.
ITRI believes that the only way to get 3D TVs into more households is to shed the glasses, which can be uncomfortable both physically and financially. The race to create glasses-free 3D TV is expected to heat up, and most of the companies currently working on the technology are in Japan and South Korea.
Earlier this year, several major television manufacturers unveiled 3D TVs, all of which currently require glasses. Actual usage of 3D technology requires a movie or television program to be formatted specifically for 3D, and there are currently only a limited number of titles available.
ITRI did not make any mention any research about whether or not people actually enjoy 3D movies or whether wearing glasses is the only obstacle to complete satisfaction. Most 3D movies require action scenes that lend themselves to 3D-friendly moments. 3D-capable TVs, however, will still play regular 2D high definition video without any difficulty.
