Flickr Unveils The New ‘Request To License’ Option To All Users!

Yahoo’s new photo-sharing acquisition, Flickr, has just opened its doors to a new option where each and every Flickr user is given the opportunity to earn revenue from their images. This new ‘Request to License’ option lets photographers nominate their photos for licensing.

It all started when Flickr decided to give its 40 million registered users a chance to make money out of their pictures. It entered into a partnership with Getty Images, the photo licensing giant. Getty initially picked the photos and photographers they liked from Flickr, tapping into more than 1000,000 photos taken by both professional and semi-professionals who posted their pictures on the site.

Now, all Flickr members will be able to offer their images to be evaluated and licensed by Getty – which means getting paid when their images are sold.

Flickr’s General Manager, Douglas Alexander said, “Flickr users are the eyes of the world.” “We have contributors from over 100 countries and images are coming in from every corner of the globe. This deal broadens the horizons and the global marketplace for commercial photography and gives our users the chance to make some money.”

Photographers who wish to be evaluated have to join the program ‘Request to License,” by labeling their photos using the Getty “g” logo. Anyone who likes the photo has to click a link that connects them with Getty, which then gets involved in the pricing, permissions and all other details.

Although, both Getty and Flickr haven’t publicly revealed the price of the images yet, the general opinion is that an image may be priced between $150 – $240.

Under the previous deal between Getty and Flickr, Getty selected the pictures it liked from Flickr and sold them to their commercial clients.  The photographers whose images were sold, were paid the industry standard commission. Now instead of Getty picking the images of its choice, the customers will make their choice of pictures labeled by the Getty logo and the respective photographers get paid.

For Getty, this is a sweet deal as Flickr is a great resource for the best pictures. Nick Evans-Lombe, Getty’s chief operating officer said that they witnessed the power of Flickr when they called out for photographers for pictures of families.

He said, “We got over 17,000 pictures back from around the world very quickly. That gave us a very broad and deep illustration of the concepts to do with family and will resonate in countries around the world.” “In the past, one of the criticisms of the stock photography market is that it has been a mostly North American and European aesthetically dominated industry.”

Getty believes that since the photographs on Flickr are not originally shot for commercial purposes, they are more authentic.

With this, there is no doubt Flickr users are going to be hugely benefited, as their work can now reach a bigger audience than ever before.
