From The Cloning Capital: Chinese iPad Clones!

An iPad With Android From China

As far as cloning goes, China wins hands down. Every type of product can be and is cloned in China. After cut-price copy cat iPods and iPhones filled the shelves of stores everywhere, the latest victim to the cloning game is none other than the iPad, which has not yet made its way into China.

Having been successfully launched in the UK and a few other countries last Friday, if and when the iPad manages to reach China, it is sure to be welcomed by several  low-priced versions already floating  in the market.
Adding insult to injury, one of the clones is even named “iPed!”  Yet another is named “APad!

According to reports, this ripping business is happening locally as the iPed is manufactured in Shenzhen, China, which is the residence of Foxconn who are the manufacturers of Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

Shenzhen City is known as a center for producing clones; especially of Apple products. There are said to be more than 400 counterfeit electronics companies in Shenzhen City, for whom cloning Apple products is the most profitable business. These cloned products are set at much lower prices, as they obviously cannot be compared to the original. They manage to sell these fake products purely focusing on the price point.

The iPed blatantly apes the iPad right from the packaging to everything else.  It copies the name and branding, and also has an Apple logo at the top of the screen. But as is expected, there are differences.

It runs Android 1.5 (cupcake) and not iPhone OS. What the consumers may find interesting is the price. The iPed is said to cost an average of US$ 150 and comes with 600Mhz Rockchip processor as opposed to iPad’s 1-GHz A4 processor, 1GB RAM, WiFi connectivity and a 7-inch screen – yes, that’s a drawback, apart from the screen resolution which is not impressive. But considering the lower cost and the fact that the iPad hasn’t made its way into China yet, it could be something people will be interested in – a poor man’s iPad perhaps.

This is not the end-all by any means, as the clone infested streets of China already have other iPad clones and sure to see many more.
