HP WebOS Tablets
HP’s acquisition of Palm was expected to have eventual consequences in the race for iPad alternatives. Today HP confirmed suspicions by announcing that their new tablet, due out in October, will run Palm’s WebOS, an operating system originally created for the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi smartphones.
The HP Slate, which at one time appeared destined to run Windows 7, will run the new Linux-based OS and, according to HP, have a “wide range” of applications available for consumers. HP has declined to comment on whether Slate tablets will still have the Windows 7 option, despite their early CES demos that showed the device running Microsoft’s OS.
This does not mean Apple needs to prepare for war just yet. It will take some time after the release for HP to start building a serious app collection. Although the Palm Pre was critically acclaimed, it did not perform well in sales and WebOS did not receive much developer attention.
HP announced its acquisition of Palm for $1.2 billion in April, and the deal does not officially close until July. Nevertheless, HP is confident that WebOS will be tablet-ready by October, just in time for the holiday shopping season.
The company known for its printers and computer hardware has stated that WebOS will make appearances in smartphones, tablets, and printers (yes even printers), but not netbooks. While the tech world is probably most excited about the prospects of WebOS-powered tablets, HP seems more excited about Internet-ready printers. Still, will the iPad, Android-powered tablets, and now the HP Slate, the new tablet market is getting interesting.
