Samsung YP-R1 MP3 Player – A Review

Samsung YP-R1

Samsung has always been known for its notebooks and television sets; they were never really famous for their MP3 players. But now, with the coming of YP-R1 MP3 player, the scene is all set to change. This player shows some massive improvements in the field, and this latest YP-R1 will be competing with the iPod Nano and Creative’s new Zen X-Fi 2.

In the YP-R1, there is a touch screen, and there is FM radio. The player itself seems a little inspired by the iPod Nano, they are mostly the same size, and they have similarly tough brushed metal sheen. There is a 2.7” display, which is larger, compared to the Nano’s 2”. You might be worried that this small screen might not function well as a touchscreen, but it does stay functional nonetheless. Maybe it’s not as responsive as the screen from Apple, but it’s resistive rather than capacitive. Also, the icons are very small – so you might just end up missing vital controls sometimes. But all said and done, you do get used to the screen, and when you do – it’s easy to work on it.

The interface is rather nice, there is a landscape fashion orientation – and you have everything clearly laid out for you on three scrollable screens.

The best thing about the YP-R1 is that it’s so intuitive – just a tap of a light bulb will adjust the brightness, and all you need to change tracks or to fast forward to another track is a slight sweep of the finger. What’s more, there are some pretty fun applications play around with – like touchscreen games and widgets. You must check out SleepCat, this, after a set interval, will turn your player off.

But keeping gadgets aside, the player itself is quite remarkable – and at the price at which it’s been launched, it’s certainly the best in the market. The music sounds amazing- thanks to the DNSe sound engine. There’s Beat DJ – which has time-and-pitch-shifting abilities, these are appropriate for virtual DJs. But more than one track can’t be supported – so you should know that, in case virtual DJing is your thing.

It must be mentioned that the YP-R1 is really excellent as a video player, and this comes as a bit of a surprise. You can drag and drop almost any video onto it, and it plays with very easy conversion. The screen is great too, for such a small player, you’re sure to be surprised by the smoothness. If you hold it up to your face, turn up the volume – it’s almost like you’re in the movie theatre!

However, the player could have done with a built-in speaker; these make it convenient to play music to friends. Another area where the player lacks is Wi-Fi – it’s not there (but you can use the Bluetooth to transfer the files, without having to hunt out your USB cable). But it’s still a great music player – one that not only sounds good but also looks good. It’s well worth the price.
