Sony World Photography Awards 2010

Sony World Photography Awards 2010

The winner of the recently held 2010 Sony World Photography Awards Campaign has finally been announced. The winning prize goes to Guilherme Junior from Brazil. The only specification for this contest was to have participants enter one single image which captured the football frenzy that seems to have grasped the entire world. This could have been anything, from the passion depicted on the face of the player, to any other winning aspect of the game of football.

The title of this winning entry is “Twisters” and this shows all the supporters of Flamengo soccer team in Rio de Janeiro. This won the best shot because it best depicted the absolute frenzy of Brazilian fans every time they watch a football game. Taken by a Sony DSLR A20 camera, he clearly deserved to be the winner. In the year 2009 this prize was won by a Pakistani photographer Sarah Ahmad for her photograph which is named “The Love of the Game: a cook, a cleaner, a mother… and an attacking midfielder”.

Delly Carr, who is reputed as one of the world’s leading sports photographers, and part of the judging panel said about the winning image: “This female fan epitomises football’s energy and passion. She is singled out from the rest of the crowd through her ‘over-the-top’ celebratory jump, and therefore as one with the team. She has channelled all her energy into that explosive reaction. Her face is pure joy. ”

When told, Guilherme Junior said: “My happiness at the moment I was told about this award was greater than I can describe.  I cannot wait to tell my friends, teachers and mentors who always believed in my talent.  I am grateful to the contest organizers and the World Photography Organisation for the opportunity to participate and for giving me this honour”.
