Using Pallets for Your Business’ Growing Clientele

Like most new businesses, you may just be breaking even and selling your products locally. However, with great marketing efforts and growth, you will soon be attracting more high-end clients than you’d ever imagined. From state to state from overseas, you will need to upgrade shipping options as well.

When shipping becomes larger than a trip to the post office, you may want to rethink your strategy. The answer is surprisingly easy – pallets.

What is a Pallet?

Pallets are one of the safest and most efficient ways of handling the shipment of goods internationally. They are flat transport structures that support goods and material in a stable way so that they can be lifted by a forklift or other heavy machine. Sometimes called a skid, a pallet can ship large quantities of a material overseas and can carry over a ton of material safely to its destination. Pallets can be made from wood (most commonly softwood), but also metal and plastic in more complex pallet systems.

History of the Pallet:

Pallets have been around for centuries and having always been one of the primary methods of moving goods from ship to land. They were once simply ‘skids,’ or wood bases to help sailors move material from ship to shore. Pallets didn’t originally have a bottom set of wood boards and had to be hoisted from place to place.

In the early 20th century, businesses quickly learned that goods moved without pallets took significantly longer to load and unload from a ship or train. In fact, over 10,000 loads of a material took several days to unload without a pallet, while with pallets this process was a mere few hours. With pallets, goods are not only safer but they can arrive much faster to their destination.

Types of Pallets:

There are several types of pallets used in shipping. Wood pallets are the most common because they are the most cost-effective option. However, many use soft wood which is not the best option for heavier materials and it may wear down quicker than other types. Paper pallets are only used for lighter loads, but many use them when recycling and biodegradability are important.

Aluminum and steel pallets are another option if you need something stronger and more weather resistant. The type of pallet that you use will depend on how far your goods are shipping, the climate to which they are heading, and the type of material that is being shipped.

Movement Overseas:

For decades, the pallet has been the single best way to ship goods overseas. They are said to be a crucial piece in global shipping. There are potentially billions crossing the world right now, although they are known as an ‘invisible’ shipping method. In fact, it is said that pallets account for almost half of the United States lumber production.

In order to ship your product anywhere in the world, it is as simple as finding a great shipping company, such as Pallet Anywhere, that can help your business send its products where they need to go – safely and quickly. Use pallets, a decades-old, trusted shipping method, to make sure that your business continues to grow and thrive.
