iPad in UK
Having exceeded all expectations and conquering the US market by selling one million tablets in the first month, this device that bridges the gap between a mobile phone and laptop, has today (Friday, May 28) been launched in the UK.
People thronged Regent Street since Thursday afternoon, to be the first ones to get their hands on this tablet-style computer, when it launched at 8 am this morning.
But for the lucky few who placed their orders earlier, the iPad was delivered hours before the launch.
With a 9.7in screen, the iPad designed for surfing the Web, email, downloading apps and watching videos; costs ₤429 for the basic 16GB model with Wi-Fi only, ₤499 for 32GB and ₤599 for 64GB. The higher range models offer the ability to use a 3G mobile phone network as well as the Wi-Fi, and cost ₤529, ₤599 and ₤699 for the 64GB model.
Jake Lee, a 17-year-old from Essex is a happy customer today, as he was the first in line and waited outside the store since midday Thursday. Although, he intended to buy the 32GB model, his dad upgraded it to 64GB seeing his determination.
Other countries where it is being released today include Australia, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Japan. The rest of the globe is not going to be left behind, July is expected to witness launches in Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Hong Kong, Mexico, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Singapore and New Zealand.

Going by consumer sentiment, the iPad is expected to be a big hit in the UK too. Vodafone, Orange, O2 and 3, the major mobile phone operators have created data plans for the 3G version, enabling users to surf the net from anywhere using the mobile phone network. The SIM used in other mobile phones will not work with the iPad as it needs a special micro-SIM.
Apart from the other “main” reasons for getting an iPad, another reason being cited today is that it is created by “Apple,” the new technology giant!
