Google Docs And The Brand New Pagination To The Browser!

As the cloud-based Google Docs is made increasingly feature rich, it proves to be stiff competition to Microsoft that held the reigns on desktop publishing for years. Google continues efforts of focusing their technology expertise on projects that alleviate the need for complex platforms and devices. The company worked on introducing new features that people are used to in desktop software, within their Docs interface in browser.

Google Docs is a browser-based application that is an online word processor, presentation editor and spreadsheet, which helps you store and share documents securely, for access online in real-time. One of the main attractions has always been the ability to access documents online from any computer.

After bringing out the new version of the Google Docs editor almost a year ago, Google has been continually adding more features.  Today, they added pagination to Google Docs.

Up until now, you couldn’t see pages visually on the screen and if you’re editing a document, you wouldn’t know how many pages of the document have already been edited.  You had to do a print preview to see how your document layout looks.  All these issues are taken care of with Google pagination!

Pagination is a document viewing feature where you can see visual pages on your screen, which means the content is divided into discrete pages. Breaks between different pages are seen visually.  Headers and footers are also visible at the top and bottom of each page, just like in Microsoft Word; instead of just at the top of the doc like it was previously.

Google posted on their blog – “Today, we’re doing another first for web browsers by adding a classic word processing feature—pagination, the ability to see visual pages on your screen. We’re also using pagination and some of Chrome’s capabilities to improve how printing works in Google Docs. Google Pagination is rolling out now and should be available to everyone by the end of the day.”

Here’s the “view menu” that allows you to toggle between “Paginated” and “Compact” document views. With manual page breaks, you can move text to the next page. You can also hide page breaks by using the “compact” option, if you prefer editing documents using a continuous layout.

Pagination also brings about better possibilities of printing using modern browsers. A new feature that’s supported by Google Docs now is “Native Printing.”  This alleviates the need to convert documents into PDF for printing which is what you had to do before this feature was introduced. Using this, you can use your browser to print and the printed document will be exactly the way it looks on the screen. This native printing feature is restricted to Chrome for now.  But it may not be long before it changes from a “Chrome native printing” feature to use on other web browsers.

Pagination is a great example of how Google Docs is even more useful now and also how Google is continually making an effort at improving their products.  In fact, for students, lack of visible pages was a deal breaker, but now they can finally keep track of the number of pages when working on their assignments.

The company is also currently said to be testing a lot of cool features with Google Docs. Google Spreadsheets are also expected to become very competitive with Excel.  Overall, Google is working toward bringing the best desktop experience online.
