Kindle for Android is Coming

Today, Amazon.com announced that they will be releasing a Kindle app for the Android mobile platform this summer. Users will be able to search 540,000 books, including 96 of 110 available New York Times Bestsellers.

The app will also have Amazon’s Whispersync technology, which will allow Android users to sync their “last page read’ between their Kindle and  mobile device so that they never lose their place in their books. They can browse by genre and author, purchase Kindle books directly on the device, choose from five different font sizes, and use hand gestures to turn pages and navigate through the book.

The Kindle app will run on any Android device, making it instantly available on hundreds of devices, including the Droid, Nexus One, HTC Incredible, and future Android-based tablets.  Amazon has already developed Kindle apps for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, PC, Mac, and Blackberry.

Although the new Android app is not surprising, it is another major step for Google to ensure that their devices offer everything that users would want.  Earlier this year, they secured a deal with Adobe to bring Flash player to Android, something that Apple has denounced and vowed not to support.  A sneak peak of the Android Kindle app is available at amazon.com/kindleforandroid.  Users can also sign up for the Kindle app release announcement.
