New Playstation 3 System Software v3.40 Released

Playstation 3 Software Update

Yesterday, Sony announced the pending release of their latest system software update (version 3.40), which adds some significant features to the Playstation 3 gaming console. Among the updates are:

  • PlayStation Plus – the new paid service for Playstation Network members. With it, members receive free full games every month, free demos of games, trailers, and trial play of new full-length games, a feature which lets you save your progress after the trial expires and pick up where you left off when you buy the full game.
  • Photo Gallery Sharing – The new features allows you to share photos on Facebook, Picasa, and with other Playstation Network members.
  • Video Editor and Uploader – It allows you to store video files on the PS3 and upload them to sites such as YouTube.
  • Five Star Rating – Rate purchased items in the Playstation Store.  It is retroactive, so you can go back to any of your previous Playstation Store purchases and rate them.
  • Power Save – The auto-off feature will be set to two hours by default to save power when you fall asleep, after playing non-stop for 12 hours.
  • Playstation Facebook app to update your status, show off trophies, publish purchases, find your Playstation Network friends on Facebook, and you know, Facebook stuff.

In addition to the PS3 firmware update, Sony simultaneously pushed out the v6.30 firmware update for the Playstation Portable (PSP).

Sony has provided instructions for updating both systems on their respective websites:
