2010 Computex
Computex is one of the world’s largest computer and technology conventions, held at the Taipei World Trade Center in Taipei, Taiwan. This year’s event starts on June 1 and concludes June 5 2010.
The first day of Computex has been dominated by tablets, with several manufacturers unveiling their “iPad killers“. The notable tablets include:
- The Asus Eee Pad, which will be a 12-inch tablet with Intel Core 2 Duo CULV processors and 10-hours of battery life. This first tablet will run Windows 7, while another promised tablet will reportedly run Google Chrome OS.
- The MSI Windpad 100 – Another Windows 7 tablet with a ten-inch screen, Intel Atom processor.
- MSI also showed off the WindPad 110 with Google Android and an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.
Meanwhile, Nvidia unveiled their plans for what they are calling the 3D PC revolution. Their vision is to bring “film-like visual fidelity” to computer screens. The presentation was coupled with the announcement of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 465, which will be Blu-ray 3D-enabled. The actual $1,500 3D-enabled PCs will include 3D displays and accompanying glasses.
Hitachi-LG announced a storage device that combines Blu-ray drive and a 32GB or 64GB solid-state drive, essentially packing the power of an optical drive and the storage capacity of a hard drive all into one slim, slot-loading device. Their aim is to create a drive small enough to fit into netbooks, tablets, and ultra-portable by eliminating the need for extra space for a second drive.

In addition to its Eee Pad, Asus also announced the release of its App Store for netbooks. With its extensive line of Eee PC netbooks, Asus has invested quite a bit into the platform. Now it seems, they are hoping to cash in a little. The Asus App Store will be installed on all Windows-based Eee netbooks in the second half of 2010. In 2011, Asus plans to add App Store support to their upcoming MeeGo-based netbooks.
