YouTube Now Serving 2 Billion Per Day

More than double the the entire prime-time audience of all three major U.S. TV networks combined, YouTube has eclipsed the 2 billion per day mark, according to its official blog.  Celebrating its five-year anniversary, YouTube thanked users for making its success possible.

They highlighted their growth of content offerings, from the humble beginning of user-generated videos to the full-quality HD streaming of commercial content, including full-length movies.  Still YouTube has managed to maintain some of its humble innocence.  The average user can still upload videos free of charge, and some of them have even become famous doing so.

When Google originally purchased YouTube, some questioned whether the site had the potential to actually make money.  Overcoming technical and legal obstacles, the site has persevered.

Now, as part of their 5-year celebration, YouTube is releasing a series of videos called “My YouTube Story” which will feature YouTube users providing testimonials about how YouTube has “shaped their lives”.  The list of personalities include both celebrities like Conan O’Brien and Katie Couric, and YouTube sensations, such as Jessica Rose (a.k.a. Lonelygirl15) .

Interestingly, YouTube created their FiveYear channel in 2007, indicating they have obviously been looking forward to this milestone for quite some time.
