Google Gets the Message, Launches Gmail

Following user complaints about the existing service, Google has created a new search based webmail. The free search based webmail is supposed to have a storage capacity of up to 8 million bits of information or 500,000 pages of email per user. The inspiration for this came from a Google user who complained of having to delete emails just to stick to the 4 MB limit. And as Google co-founder and president of technology, Sergey Brin states, “If a Google user has a problem with email, well, so do we.”

On April 1st 2010, Google announced that they will begin the testing the preview version of Gmail to a handful of users. The idea behind this new webmail is that users should never have to delete or file any message or have to struggle to find an email that they’d sent or received.

The new features include:

  • Search: Based on google search technology of using keywords or advanced search features, people can quickly search every email they’ve sent or received.
  • Storage:  Gmail now comes with 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of free storage which is 100 times that what most other free webmail services offer.
  • Speed: Using email is now faster and more efficient. Google have eliminated the need to file messages into folders, and individual emails are automatically organized into meaningful “conversations” that show messages in the context of all the replies sent in response to them.
