3D Gaming
Time to get yourself a 3D TV and 3D glasses! Sony is finally bringing the 3D gaming experience to your living rooms with four 3D games for the PlayStation being rolled out today, June 10, 2010.
The four 3D games: Wipeout HD, Pain, Super Stardust HD and a demo of MotorStorm Pacific Rift are available for download. PS3 owners can now get all four for ₤23.99. (MotorStorm demo is free)
- WipEout HD (full game) – Navigation of futuristic racetracks at breathtaking speeds.
- Super Stardust HD (full game) – Navigation of the battleground with asteroids flying past you.
- PAIN – The 3D content includes the Downtown area and tutorial along with 3 modes, which includes two new modes created for 3D: Alien Toss and Ice Breaker.
- MotorStorm Pacific Rift (demo) – This is a single track, single player race around the deadly Kanaloa Bay with you in the driver’s seat of a buggy, venturing out for a dangerous battle.
Due to a free firmware update released in April, the PS3 system is the only console that can support full stereoscopic 3D gaming.
Sony’s director of PlayStation hardware marketing, John Koller says, “We’re extremely excited to be at the helm of a whole new gaming experience unlike anything offered before.” “This is only a small taste of the 3D experiences you can expect from Sony’s Bravia range of 3D TVs and the PlayStation 3.”
He said, “The PlayStation 3 system continues to be at the forefront of innovation. In addition, 3D Blu-ray movie playback is coming to the PS3 this year via a firmware update.”

Sony Electronics has also announced the availability of its 3D capable Bravia HDTVs for pre-sale, and they are expected to be shipped to retailers later this month. They come in different screen sizes and models. While some come with active glasses, others don’t, giving users the option to choose the type of 3D entertainment that suits them the best. If you’re willing to shell out $5,000 for the flagship model, you can own the 60-inch monster from Sony!
These HDTVs come with PlayStation Network vouchers that will allow free download of all four 3D games, providing 100 hours of gameplay.
Sony said that for those who already own Super Stardust HD, PAIN or WipEout HD games, and wish to play them in 3D, they will be able to download free patches that enable stereoscopic 3D gameplay. MotorStorm Pacific Rift is anyway a free demo.

One important point to note is that the PS3’s 3D capabilities will work with 3D TVs from other manufacturers too.
